DESCRIPTION

This project template "recipe" is a framework to help your project managers and teams get started with a hybrid agile and waterfall project management model.

Combining them both on the same project will give you the power to drive known best-practice tasks along with yet discovered issues, stories, and other tasks in an agile scrum and sprint environment.

Import this starter process for FREE and use it for your hybrid agile and waterfall needs. You can use it as it is or simply customize it to your project needs.

This process assumes you would like to use Agile for iterative builds. The problem with other tools and processes in the market is they only give you part of the picture. Most Agile projects are truly hybrid agile/waterfall. The development team uses scrum and sprint practices, whereas, the project manager and business analysts follow a more traditional waterfall process for tasks such as defining the charter, scope, identifying sponsors, etc. They end up with separate processes and project tools for the same project.

This Pie recipe solves the above problem.

  • The first part of the project process is for the traditional methods and best practices for initiating and planning the project where you know in advance what needs to be done.
  • The middle phases are for the fluid and dynamic interactions of scrum sessions and sprints for constant deployment.
  • The last phase is back to the known process steps for finalizing and closing out the project.

If you're project has a never ending budget for perpetual deployments and you only need the pure agile/scrum/sprint phases, you can still use this recipe by simply removing the waterfall slices. Likewise, if you're project is pure waterfall, remove the sprint sections.

The above screenshot image shows the Plan phase and its process boxes.

The first box Develop Project Charter is selecting showing its tasks. I hovered over task #4 to reveal its how-to description. Most of these tasks have descriptions ready for you to use or modify.

The Sprint phase is used for adding your stories, feature tickets, or issues. In the above screenshot I'm displaying how we use the board in our internal Pie development project.

This is our list of work for this week's sprint. Color code them for different types of tickets. Assign to team members, Drag and drop to move between columns.

ABOUT THE CREATOR

Author: Paul Dandurand

Company: PieMatrix

Years ago, we used Jira for a while and then switched to Pivotal Tracker. Once Pie was ready for serious agile use in early 2019, we stopped using these other tools and instead use Pie exclusively for our scrum and sprints.

We manage all of our DevOps processes in Pie using this recipe among a number of other ones. It's a real delight, especially for our team.

PieMatrix is the creator of Pie and we work hard to not only build one of the greatest visual project and process tools in the market, but also make a commitment to bring you great process content. Plus, we "eat our own dog food".

We provide tips and guidance on how to best improve and implement this recipe for your own organization. Reach out to us with questions and ideas and we'll be happy to respond. Everyone loves pies!
